As we look at Jesus as The Foundation in our Word Nerd Wednesday study of the names of Jesus, I’m sharing Katie Chew’s contribution to More Than A Name.
“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”1 Corinthians 3:11
Rock analogies are used to describe Jesus throughout the Bible. He is our Rock, our Fortress, the Cornerstone.
Today, we look at another rock analogy Jesus gave: the wise and foolish builders of Matthew 7:24-27.
Growing up in the church, I always thought Jesus was the foundational Rock in this story that we were supposed to build upon as wise builders. But a closer look shows that to be false. Jesus says the wise man is the one who
“hears these words of mine and puts them into practice (24)”
whereas the foolish builder that chooses sand as his foundation
“hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice (26).”
Both hear, but the wise man puts the words into practice. The foundation is obedience to the teachings of Jesus.
We must base our lives on the truth of Who Jesus is.
This means trusting his Word when our feelings scream for vengeance. It means obeying Him when the lust of our flesh rises up. The good news of Christ has always involved death. For Jesus it was the physical laying down of his life, taking our sins upon Himself, the perfect, spotless lamb. For us as followers, it is a death to ourselves, our desires, our own way of life. By His grace and strength, we must trust our Lord and His Word, submitting every part of ourselves to Him.
We are wise when we live out and practice the teachings of our Lord. When we see his Word as precious, His Word becomes the foundation upon which we build our lives, allowing us to withstand any trials and hardships this life may throw at us. Make no mistake, it is far easier to build on sand than rock. It is far easier to live for ourselves. But easy things are rarely worth doing.
When the storms of life rage against you, dive into His Word and cling obediently to his teachings. He is the Master Builder and will create in you a firm foundation.

What does this name for Jesus teach you about your responsibilities in your relationship with Him?
How does this name impact your identity in Christ?
List three ways you will build your foundation of faith on Jesus’ obedience.
Dear Jesus, The Foundation, reveal to me the places where I have built a foundation on something other than Your faithfulness and obedience. Forgive me and lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.
