We continue our Word Nerd Wednesday study of the names of Jesus with The Indescribable Gift taken from More Than A Name. What better way to celebrate Christmas!
The Indescribable Gift
“Thanks be to God for His Indescribable Gift.”2 Corinthians 9:15
Gift giving is not my love language. Each year, I struggle with what to buy for loved ones. I long to give them things that are meaningful and express my love for them. And every year I wind up stressed out because I can’t seem to come up with that perfect something.
But one year, I found the perfect gift for my mother. Or so I thought. I was convinced she would love it. I just knew it was something she would use. But months later when I visited her house again, I found it collecting dust on a high shelf in her laundry room.
I was so disappointed she wasn’t using what I had given her. She moved from her house to a smaller condo a few years later and I thought she had probably donated it by then. But on my first visit, I found it hanging on the wall in her spare bathroom. I was overjoyed, not only that it was something she had chosen to keep when she downsized, but that she had found a use for it.
My gift-giving skills may be flawed, but God’s gifts are perfect.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.”James 1:7
Jesus is a gift so perfect He is indescribable. He fulfills every one of God’s promises to us and makes possible things we cannot even imagine. He came to earth as a babe in a manger to give us something we could never earn or deserve.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”Ephesians 2:9
The Gift Nobody Will be Regifting
Jesus is a gift far too many people refuse to admit they need, while others struggle to determine where He fits in their lives. But when we finally put the faith God gives us into action, it becomes a gift we know we cannot live without. And not just for eternity, but a gift so precious it changes every moment of our lives and fills us with peace and love and joy indescribable, irreplaceable, untarnishable. Now that’s one Christmas gift none of us will be regifting!
Just as seeing my mom’s gift put to good use brought me joy, I know God celebrates with His people who find ways to use the faith He has given them to withstand the trials and temptations of this world. If we ever fear we’re running low, we can always ask Him to increase our faith and help us in our unbelief (Mark 9:23-25); He is faithful to provide all we need for whatever He allows us to face this side of heaven.
Make room to receive God’s greatest gift with joy and gratitude and search for ways to live out that faith for His glory.
