When You Wonder if You’re Too Messy for God

Have you ever wondered if you’re too messy for God? I know I have. But I thank God He never left me feeling defeated. We are never too messy for God to make us His masterpieces!

When I Saw Myself in a Messy Pan

Never Too Messy For God
Have you ever wondered if your messes make you disposable?

“Ewwww!! Throw. That. Away!”

My son scrunched up his face and put a protective hand over his mouth when his gaze landed on last night’s 9×13 baking dish in the sink. Admittedly, the baked-on, charred, remnants of cilantro lime chicken looked unappealing at best. But throwing the whole pan away seemed pretty extreme, even to this dish-washing diva who’s squeamish about dipping her hands in greasy water.

Determined to show him hard work is worth the effort, I snatched my scrubbing sponge and squirted pretty pink liquid detergent into the black and blue dish while filling it with steaming water. Then we watched in amazement as the soap suds bubbled up and began to lift away the gunk.

That’s when I saw myself in that messy pan.

How many times have I felt like I’m not worth the effort? Like my life was too messy to ever come clean or the choices I’ve made left a permanent stain. Or as if I was too damaged to be desirable because of what someone else did to me. Or even like the layers of my messiness multiplied exponentially with every mistake I made.

To make matters even worse, this convenience laden world full of disposable dishes does us a disservice. It sends a subtle message that nothing is worth keeping if it gets too messy. Even us. Then, the only thing I ever find when I try to keep the messes from sticking or scrub myself clean, is more stuck-on grime.

Nothing I can do will ever make me mess-free.

Only the blood of Jesus and the waters of baptism can make me clean.

You see, God wasn’t afraid to get His hands dirty for our sake. His Son came to earth so we could come clean. His Word and work define our eternal worth. There is nobody so messy He can’t make a masterpiece!

But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light,

we have fellowship with one another,

and the blood of Jesus, His Son

purifies us from all sin.

1 John 1:7 NIV

What He did for me and you is even more amazing than the triple grease fighting power of my liquid detergent. I don’t have to lift a finger. As our key verse tells us Jesus’ blood purifies us from our every sin and mess. As if that wasn’t enough already, He also gives us fellowship to walk together and remind each other of His amazing grace.

Never Too Messy for God
Never Too Messy For God to Make You His Masterpiece.

So the next time your messes leave you wondering if you’re worth the work, remember this: You’re worth it to God and His Son already did all the work.

Never Too Messy for God

No matter how much of a mess we have been or ever will be, because of Jesus, we will never be too messy for God.

Who will you remind today of God’s amazing grace that assures us we’re never too messy?
