Commissioned as a Missionary

In today’s world, one might think of a missionary is one who travels to remote countries to spread the gospel or to minister to those in our own communities by reaching out and inviting them to visit our places of worship.  In Matthew 28, Jesus addresses the apostles before he leaves earth and outlines His expectations of their missionary works after He has ascended.

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:19-20*

This scripture is referred to as The Great Commission and documents Jesus’s authority and how He shared it with the disciples in order to spread God’s word throughout the land.  The risen Savior’s strategy was simple, yet profound.  He requested them to be God’s missionaries.   Jesus called the disciples to Himself to reveal and teach God’s word, learn about Him, spend time with Him, and then He sent them out to the world to spread the Good News.*    The word “missionary” is not found in the Bible, but the concept is used throughout the scriptures.

Some of the early missionaries in the New Testament were the Apostles and the most famous missionary after Jesus’ resurrection was Paul.   God sent Paul out to teach the Jews and the Gentiles who He was an about His love and forgiveness of their sins by Paul’s own testimony.***

The missionary theme is carried throughout the New Testament in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”*  This was illustrated by the apostles evangelizing Jerusalem, the expansion of churches in Judea and Samaria, and gentiles being exposed to the gospel to all ends of the earth.  ****

Modern Day Missionaries

As Christians, we are all commissioned to missionary work.  In our worship, works, and faith we should share God’s glory and grace with all those we encounter.  We should also pass on God’s love by accepting all people as they are and demonstrate peace with our words and actions.  A missionary invites others to become a brother or sister in Christ and opens the door for them to choose to be in God’s kingdom for eternity.
