WordNerd Wednesday – Resurrection

ResurrectionI’m excited to have Sarah Travis around My Messy Desk for Word Nerd Wednesday!

Resurrection — 1. the rising of Christ from the dead;

                                 2. the rising again to life of all the human dead before the final judgment.

Christians throughout the world celebrated Easter Sunday, which we can read about in Matthew 28:1-10, just a few days ago. We celebrated the wonder of the cross…the fact that Jesus, the Son of God is ALIVE! Yes, He suffered and died on the cross, but oh sweet friends, the grave could not hold Him! He is RISEN! {Matthew 28:6}

My favorite verse containing the word “resurrection” is John 11:25.

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me, even if he dies, will live.” John 11:25 HCSB

The Greek word in this verse is anastasis” which means “a rising again” or “a rising from the dead.”

So what does Christ’s resurrection mean to you and me?

He rose up from the grave so that we can rise up from the grave of our sin and death. Our sins lead us into spiritual death and, while carrying the burden of them, we can never fully experience the joy of Christ’s resurrection in this life, or eternity. But friends, we can rise up with hope of eternal life because:

“He has been resurrected!” Mark 16:6 HCSB

“For by {the} grace {of God} you are saved {from eternal punishment for sin} through faith {in what the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross}, and this is not from yourselves, it is the {freely given} gift of God” Ephesians 2:8 NET (annotation mine).

In his first letter to the church in Corinth, Paul spoke about resurrection. With some failing to believe in Christ’s rising from the dead, he made the resurrection from the dead, of both Christ and the believer, clear!

“But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 ESV

When sin entered the world through Adam and Eve {Genesis 3:6}, man inherited a sinful nature from which there is no escape. But! Jesus took the punishment for all our sins when He died on the cross. He took them to the grave with Him and He left them there when He rose again. The One who defeated the grave rose again in victory allowing you and me to have hope in our own victorious resurrection!

Christian … the same power that conquered the grave lives.in.you! Through the Holy Spirit, the resurrection power of Jesus Christ resides in all who believe in, and have surrendered their lives to the Lord.

And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you.” Romans 8:11 HCSB

Friends, Easter Sunday is not the only time we celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ — we celebrate Him. Every.Single.Day!

Every day we worship our Savior who rose up and walked away from the grave, leaving our sins dead and buried.

Every day we give praise and thanks to our Father God who will one day raise us up into the Heavens to a new life with Him.

Every day we live with the hope of our coming resurrection, propelling us forward into the world so that we might bring others with us.

The final resurrection day is coming…

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will RISE first. Then we who are still alive will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and so we will always be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 HCSB

Who will you bring with you on that day? Tell someone about the hope we receive through the resurrection of Jesus today!
