Please welcome my dear friend, Stephanie Adams from Real Women Ministries to My Messy Desk today as she dives deeply into a three-part series on God’s characteristics.
In The Beginning…
From the very beginning, before time, there was GOD - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - together as One. In their infinite wisdom (omniscience), power (omnipotence), and presence (omnipresence) they created all things.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2 ESV
Over the next few #WordNerdWednesdays, we will look at three characteristics which describe God - Omnipotent, Omnipresent, and Omniscient.
It is likely you have heard these words used to describe God, but you may not know what they mean, or how they apply to our relationship with Him.
Omnipotent Defined
Today we will look at Omnipotent -
Merriam Webster defines Omnipotent as complete and unlimited power; almighty; virtually unlimited authority or influence. From the Latin: omni - all and potens - potent (having authority)
Strong’s Concordance (a cross-reference tool for words in the Bible back to their original text) defines Omnipotent in the Greek as: Pantokrator (#3841) - (1) he who holds sway over all things (2) the ruler of all (3) Almighty; God
Pantokrator comes from the root words Pas (Strong’s #3956) which means all, each and every; individually and collectively and Kratos (Strong’s #2904) which means force, strength; power, might; dominion
God is Omnipotent
When we look at these definitions in light of the character of God we understand He is all-powerful, having authority in each and every aspect of our lives, both as individuals and collectively as a body of believers.
Throughout Scripture, we can find demonstrations of His power. Not only does the book of Genesis show us of His awesome display of power at creation, but Nehemiah also tells us of His greatness.
“You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.”
Nehemiah 9:6 ESV
Omnipotent is All Powerful
John also reminds us nothing exists without Him because He is the all powerful Creator of everything.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
John 1:1-5 ESV
John continues in the passage with an encouragement to us that even in our darkest times, whether personally or as a nation, God is able to bring light to our circumstances because of His life-giving power.
When the Omnipotent One Rules Our Hearts
As we hear of more terrorist attacks, lawmakers engaging in corruption in pursuit of political gain, innocent blood being shed in the name of religion, and all the stresses and worries of our personal households, isn’t it good to know God is in control of it all? To know we can trust Him with our storms because with one whisper He can calm the chaos?
God, Himself even said:

Take heart today, friend. Because of God’s Omnipotent ways, there is nothing we are facing that is too difficult for Him. If God can create all things from formless void with the speaking of one word, then He is more than able to handle our burdens and cares.
Prayer
Father, we are so thankful that Your ways are all powerful. Help us today to trust in You through all of our trials. When we face obstacles that are seemingly too big for us, remind us nothing is too difficult for You. Amen.
